, unfortunately, unfolding in connecticut right now. in newtown, connecticut, at a small elementary school. the sandy hook elementary school. for those of you who are just tuning in, we are now getting numbers, our own john king reporting, quoting law enforcement sources as saying at least 20, but perhaps closer to 30 individuals, many of them children, have been killed in this incident. individual suspect, a 20-year-old, is -- the suspect, the shooter is a 20-year-old. law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation telling our susan candiotti, that suspect, we believe, is dead right now. you just heard police at a small briefing, didn't provide a lot of information, but they did tell us the area now appears to be secure, but this has been a horrific, horrific mass killing at an elementary school in connecticut. a school for kids from kindergarten through fourth grade. we're watching all of this unfold. lisa procachini is on the phone right now. she's a parent of an 8-year-old at the school, the sandy hook elementary school. your 8-year-old is fine, i take it, lisa. tell us w

this morning spoke volumes as the nation and newtown remember what happened one week ago today. only rain drops heard during this moment. firefighters there in newtown, paying tribute to 20 young children, 6, 7 years of age and seven adults gunned down for reasons we may never know. the reflections began at 9:30 a.m. eastern time, that is the precise time that first call came in. at least 29 states held a moment of silence, put flags at half-staff, even parts of the internet went silent this morning. video gamers put down their consoles in unity and bells across connecticut state sounded for each killed at sandy hook elementary. of newtown, connecticut and everything happening in that tiny town. president obama and some democratic members of congress are attempting to turn tragedy and outrage and national heart break into policy instead. in about 45 minutes the president will name vice president joe biden to lead a government wide gun law reform initiative. in the meantime, the house minority leader nancy pelosi, and several of her colleagues are pushing right now to outlaw high capacity ammo clips and beef up security in schools. a few things are clear at the outset, a debate long dormant in this country is dormant no more. just like the pain from the massacre of innocents, the gun debate is not going to go away any time soon. dana bash is live on capitol hill. seems things are moving much faster he it white house. what is in the works right now? >> as you said we expect the president to come out and talk to reporters to officially tap joe biden, his vice president, for this role, very interesting role, to lead what is essentially being called an interagency look at what they can do post this horrible tragic s

blitzer reporting live right now from newtown, connecticut. the 20 children gunned down in their own elementary school were 6 and 7 years old. they were practically babies, as the people here in newtown, connecticut, mourn. we now know the names of the victims of the school massacre. authorities releasing the list just a little while ago. we're also learning just how brutally they died. the medical examiner says, every one of the 26 victims were shot more than once, apparently with a semiautomatic. the relatives of the shooter are struggling to competent when the loss of life, including nancy, who was gunned down by her son. no word on a motive. police say they have found very good evidence at the school and at the lanza home. for more right now on the investigation, let's bring in our national correspondent, susan candiotti, here in newtown, connecticut. with all of us, she's working her sources. what's the latest, susan? >> reporter: hi, wolf. of course, the question is what move a 20-year-old young man to target so many innocent victims. investigator are looking everywhere for clu

of an entinteragen to develop new processes in the wake of this terrible tragedy in newtown, connecticut in which 20 children and six adults were massacred in an elementary school. a mother was massacred in her bed and a killer killed himself. it is an unprecedented action. it seems by the federal government at the time to pult into context how the response can be from the government to try to incorporate some kind of gun initiative, perhaps education initiative, mental health initiative. we're waiting to get the details. as we await the president and vice president, i turn the baton over to my colleague suzanne malveaux with the newsroom. suzanne. >> thank you, ashleigh. this put guns back on the national agenda, and today we're getting a two-minute warning. that means the president will arrive very shortly in the press briefing room to explain, to talk about his role and the government's role. he was moved by what he saw in connecticut, and he says that he wanted to make this a priority in his administration. so we're waiting for those remarks. we want to bring in wolf blitzer to talk about this.
